Dr. Regina Bordieri
Couple's therapy is often overlooked in the treatment of bipolar disorder despite the potential benefits to both diagnosed and non-diagnosed partners.
Shifts in bipolar symptoms can be confusing to both partners and have the potential to escalate conflict in couple relationships. At the same time, negative conflict in couple relationships can increase the risk of bipolar symptoms and mood episode relapse.
Understanding the complex interaction between partners' experiences of bipolar disorder and the couple's relationship history is often an important consideration to identifying and moving beyond the negative conflict patterns that keep couples stuck.
I work with partners to help them gain insight into their unique experiences of bipolar disorder in the context of their relationship. As an emotionally focused therapist I collaborate with my couples to identify & exit negative cycles that keep them locked in conflict and disconnection so they can turn to one another for support and comfort.
